What is Medical Reflexology? Our hands and feet are prodigious computers which are constantly sending information back to our brain. There are 7000 nerve endings in each foot but, unfortunately, due to our modern sedentary lives and our tight shoes with thick soles not only many of these nerves are not being stimulated anymore but the blood flow from the feet back to the heart is also not optimal. Consequently, congestions and blockages can occur in the body leading to inflammatory conditions, disturbances in the nerve and blood flows, a poor absorption of nutrients, a weakened immune system, and a sluggish elimination of toxins. This can only result in: pain, stress, and the onset of illness. Medical reflexology is a complementary therapy which is either practiced in private consultations, or in hospitals in conjunction with other treatments. In some countries, its benefits are better known, recognized, and integrated in the medical system than in others. Medical reflexology uses specialized techniques with specific objectives: - To stimulate blood flow - both the superficial and the deeper blood flow systems - in order to bring oxygenated blood to all our cells, allowing each cell to function optimally, - To strengthen the immune system by stimulating the elimination of toxins (through the activation of the lymphatic system), A properly designed reflexology treatment plan results in: 1. The stimulation of our natural healing processes, these being seemingly weakened by our modern life-styles, Unfortunately, medical reflexology and its corresponding therapeutic benefits are still widely unrecognized in Spain while randomized clinical trials have proven beyond a doubt the effectiveness of this complementary therapy. Not surprisingly, more and more hospitals worldwide are integrating reflexology in their various departments, the main ones being oncology, orthopedics, and gynecology-maternity. Medical reflexology has little in common with the type of reflexology given in spas, which usually limits itself to a superficial foot massage without any therapeutic benefits.
Florence is a qualified reflexologist certified by the International Institute of Reflexology in London Florence is French and speaks fluently English, French, Spanish, and Dutch. She created the English website www.reflexology4backpain.com, an extensive site on the subject of back pain and reflexology. The website is visited by more than 80 countries. Florence also writes articles in specialized magazines such as the magazine of the Reflexology Association of America or that of the South African Reflexology Society. Florence takes on any type of medical condition (whether recent or chronic for many years, whether very painful or just a little, whether well defined as a specific illness/disease or whose causes are not well understood), any type of pain, and any type of stress.
A complete reflexology session lasts for about an hour, depending on the nature of the problem. Since the resistance is not the same in the elderly who are weak, in very ill people, in some children, in babies, and in cancer patients the time of a treatment session is reduced to a maximum of 30 minutes. At the end of the first session a treatment plan will be agreed with the patient. It is important to understand that the first 3 sessions need to happen close to each other in order for the above mentioned effects to kick in.
